Overcoming a Shooting Slump: Regain Your Confidence!

As someone who has helped hundreds of players improve their shooting, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges athletes face when it comes to breaking out of a slump. While shot correction often comes quickly, the most common struggle is building confidence for game situations.

Confidence is key to shooting success, and regaining it requires a deliberate mental shift. One principle I emphasize with players is this: you cannot hold two thoughts at the same time. If you focus on one, the other fades away. Instead of dwelling on missed shots, defensive pressure, or the crowd’s expectations, choose to focus on constructive elements of your game.

So How Do We Do This?

What should a player focus on, whether they make or miss a shot?

1. Focus on Mechanics

• Hand Placement: Was your middle finger the last to touch the ball? The middle finger is the longest and best positioned to guide the ball in a straight line. If the ball came off your index or ring finger, it might veer to the right or left.

• Arm Usage: Did you rely too much on arm strength? Your arms should provide balance and form, while power comes primarily from your legs.

• Leg Power: Did you use the right amount of leg strength? Overusing your legs can lead to overshooting, while not using them enough results in short shots.

2. Check Alignment and Balance

• Body Positioning: Were your feet, hips, and shoulders squared to the basket? Proper alignment helps direct the ball straight to the target.

• Verticality: Are you jumping and landing vertically, or are you twisting or moving excessively on your landing? A clean vertical jump minimizes variables and keeps your shot consistent.

These physical adjustments not only improve shooting form but also help shift your mental focus to productive analysis. This prevents overthinking, restores confidence, and ensures you’re ready to seize open opportunities instead of passing them up.

Remember: Not Shooting Helps the Defense

When you hesitate or stop shooting altogether, you’re doing the defense a favor. They no longer need to guard you as closely, which disrupts your team’s offensive flow.

If you’re struggling with your shot or confidence, I can help. Let’s work together to refine your mechanics and rebuild your mental game.
